Museums to Visit in the US
There are about 35,000 museums in the United States (more than the country’s 13,000 Starbucks), covering a variety of interesting and diverse fields and a vast period of history from around the world. Among them, many stand out, and here are some American museums that seem to be among the most memorable.
Detroit Institute of Arts – Detroit
It is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts 100 galleries on almost 63,000 square meters, and it is one of the few American museums known as “encyclopedic”, i.e. whose immense collection covers from antiquity to contemporary art, with works from around the world. National Gallery of Art – DC
The National Gallery, the giant of fine arts, whose entry is free, includes collections from the Middle Ages to the present day, including a superb collection of works of the Italian Renaissance, and some sculptures by Rodin and Degas, and others to admire while strolling in the Garden of Sculptures.
Minneapolis Institute of Art – Minneapolis
The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) is one of America’s largest museums, with a collection of nearly 90,000 works – an encyclopedic collection – spanning 20,000 years of history and the six continents.
Getty Center – Los Angeles
Consisting of six buildings perched on a hill in Los Angeles, the Getty Center was born thanks to the donations of billionaire Jean Paul Getty, and its collections today include works from the Middle Ages to the present, enhanced by natural light.
The Art Institute – Chicago
The second largest museum of American art after New York’s MET, the Art Institute of Chicago boasts an impressive collection of art, with 300,000 works dating from Byzantine art to contemporary art, admired by over 2 million visitors. Special mention to collections of modern art and impressionist art, which, according to the museum, are among the 2 and 3 largest in the world.
Cleveland Museum of Art – Cleveland
The Cleveland Museum of Art opens its doors for free to the public, to admire its impressive collections of pre-Columbian, Egyptian, medieval and Asian art (one of the most beautiful of the United States for the latter). Its almost 600,000 visitors a year place it among the most visited art museums in the world.
MET – New York
270 rooms, 600 sq. Km, 250,000 works … The MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) is one of the largest art museums in the world, which is difficult (impossible?) To visit in one go. The museum is particularly proud of its antique collections (Greek in particular), European and American art.
American Museum of Natural History – New York
One of New York’s greatest museums, the American Museum of Natural History is located in the heart of Central Park, home to more than 32 million artifacts, and a magnificent collection of fossils and insects passionate), as well as beautiful dinosaur skeletons, and a life-size reconstruction of a blue whale.
Field Museum of Natural History – Chicago
Another impressive natural history museum, Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History has more than 4 billion years of history, including dinosaur skeletons and many stuffed animals from far away.
